What's My Motivation?
Through her work, Nancy McDonald inspires a fresh perspective that allows both businesses and individuals to enhance performance and improve relationships, whether at work or at home. She loves sharing the tools and skills of the actor because she believes that these same tools and skills make one a better human being in work and in life.
LEARN YOUR LINES…
After receiving a BFA summa cum laude in Theatre from Wright State University, Nancy McDonald started her career as an award-winning creative writer and producer for WHIO-TV in Dayton, Ohio. She moved to New York City to work as a professional actress and, while there, she also turned her attention to corporate training, which provided a completely different avenue for creativity.
ALL THE WORLD’S A STAGE…
Nancy has been lucky enough to live a life focused in the theatre. During her long acting career, Nancy was a founding member of Shakespeare Stage Company in New York. She was founder and producer of The Writer’s Lab in Hollywood, a company of stellar professional writers, actors, directors and comedians working to develop quality scripts for film, theater, and television.
Now living in Oregon with husband Laurence Overmire, she teaches her signature adult courses Acting for NonActors, Playing With Shakespeare, How to Tell Your Story and the advanced Professional Actors Class at Lakewood Center for the Arts. A strong proponent of arts education, she and her husband provide the arts residencies Loud and Clear and Read Write Act through Oregon Children’s Theatre which they bring to schools throughout the year.
Nancy often provides private one-on-one or small group coaching, occasionally lectures for Portland Community College, and can be found teaching various classes, lectures and workshops at other locations in and around the Portland area. Along with her work as educator and coach, Nancy worked for over 5 years with some of the best in the business, producing training, fundraising and marketing videos and documentaries for Magaurn Video Media.
Nancy’s business clients have included large corporations in New York and Los Angeles, Oregon and Ohio, as well as a variety of small to mid-size work environments across the country, including Intel, CBS Inc., Deloitte, Nationwide, Bank One, AK Steel, GE Card Services, and Honda to name only a few.
In the nonprofit sector, Nancy was Chair of Project Management Institute’s Community OutReach (Portland, OR chapter) where she was instrumental in forming and leading the fledgling program through its first year.

THERE ARE NO SMALL PARTS…
As an actor, Nancy has performed in over 60 plays and numerous commercials in New York City, Los Angeles and other cities throughout the U.S. and in Canada. She had principal roles in the television soap operas, All My Children, One Life to Live and Search for Tomorrow and appeared in the feature film Bonfire of the Vanities starring Tom Hanks and Morgan Freeman. A diverse performer, she even did stand-up in some well-known comedy clubs. Nancy has learned through every gig, especially from her work with many prominent directors, including Brian DePalma, Herb Kenwith, George Grizzard, Twyla Tharp, Brian Murray, Stephen Porter and London's David Perry. She studied acting with Larry Moss in New York, and at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and the London Shakespeare Studio in the UK.
Nancy studied directing with Nagle Jackson, former artistic director of the McCarter Theatre at Princeton, and worked with Michael Parva at The Directors Company in New York. A proud member of SAG-AFTRA and Actors' Equity, Nancy is currently represented by Ryan Artists. |
She and a stalwart troupe of six, started Shakespeare Stage Company in New York, with the intent of focusing on fidelity to Shakespeare's text and language as well as to ensemble acting, bringing live classical theatre to those who might otherwise not come in contact with it. She was co-founder of The Writer’s Lab in Hollywood, where she led a company of professional writers, actors, comedians and producers in an organization designed to foster the development of quality scripts for film, theatre and television. She was instrumental in providing a non-judgmental, stimulating environment that fostered the growth of both writer and performer and encouraged the creation of many new works.
In the training arena, Nancy has taught everything from out-of-the-box software to proprietary tools, always including the fact that these are tools of communication and production. With her trademark enthusiasm, she has instilled companies with basic project management skills and influenced strategic planning. Using the tools of discipline, creativity, focus, intention, empathy and improvisation, she helps companies to identify the strengths within the organization and to transform their individual teams into a working ensemble.
